Officials say Captain Wissam Eid of the Internal Security Forces was the apparent target of the attack in the Hazmieh neighborhood on the eastern edge of Beirut.
Lebanese television broadcast video footage from the scene that showed a plume of black smoke rising from the street, and several cars burning.
It was not clear if the bomb was placed on the side of the road or in a vehicle.
Earlier this month, a car bomb targeting a U.S. embassy vehicle killed three bystanders and wounded the driver. There were no American casualties in that attack.
