Iraq's deputy foreign minister (Labeed Abawi) says Iraqi President Jalal Talabani extended the invitation to Mr. Ahmadinejad.
The visit would be the first by an Iranian president to Iraq. Iran had no immediate comment on the Iraqi announcement.
Iran and Iraq fought a war from 1980 to 1988 that killed hundreds of thousands of people. Relations have improved since Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, was ousted from power in the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
