U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says sending additional U.S. Marines to Afghanistan will help pressure Taliban insurgents and does not reflect dissatisfaction with the performance of NATO countries there.
Gates also praised NATO allies serving in the Afghan mission, saying countries like Britain, Canada and the Netherlands have stepped up to the plate (come through) and are playing a significant role in Afghanistan.
His comments at a press conference today (Thursday) in Washington come a day after a newspaper report (in the Los Angeles Times) quoted the defense chief as saying some NATO troops were not prepared to fight the Taliban insurgency.
The quote prompted a strong rejection from some governments and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
Gates also told reporters today that he personally reached out to the Canadian government to clarify his published remarks. He said he was expressing concern that the NATO alliance overall does not provide specific training for counter-insurgency operations.
Canada has more than one thousand troops fighting alongside U.S., British and Dutch soldiers in Afghanistan's volatile south.
