스리랑카 군 당국자들는 공군 전투기들이 스리랑카 북부에 위치한 타밀 호랑이 반군 은신 기지에 대대적인 폭격을 가했다고 밝혔습니다.
스리랑카 국방부 관리들은 17일 킬리노치치의 반군 거점지역 근처에 가해진 이번 공격으로 이 은신 기지가 완전히 피괴됐다고 말했습니다. 하지만 친 반군 웹사이트는 폭탄 공격이 민간인 거주 지역에 가해져 7명이 부상했다고 밝혔습니다.
이 보다 앞서 16일 수도 콜롬보에서 약 240 km떨어진 부탈라 마을의 한 만원 버스에서 폭탄이 폭발해 26명 이상이 사망하고 수십명이 부상했습니다. 이후 무장괴한들은 공포에 질려 대피하려는 주민들에게 무차별 사격을 가했습니다.
관리들은 또 폭발 사고 현장에서 멀리 떨어지지 않은 지역에서 한 군 차량에 폭탄 공격이 가해졌다고 말했습니다. 이 공격으로 군인 3명이 숨졌습니다.
한편 마힌다 라자팍사 스라랑카 대통령은 타밀 호랑이 반군의 목표인 ‘분리 독립’은 수용할 수 없다고 말했습니다.
Sri Lanka's military says air force jets have bombed and destroyed a Tamil Tiger rebel hideout in the country's north.
Defense officials say today's (Thursday's) attack took place near the rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi.
Officials say the hideout was completely destroyed. However, a pro-rebel website (TamilNet) says the bombs hit a civilian area and wounded seven people.
On Wednesday, at least 26 people were killed and dozens injured when a roadside bomb tore through a packed bus. The blast occurred in the town of Buttala (in Monaragala district), about 240 kilometers outside Colombo.
Gunmen then shot panicked people as they tried to flee the scene.
Later, the military says a second bomb struck a military vehicle not far from the first explosion. Three soldiers were wounded.
In a statement, Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa emphasized the Tigers' goal of separation is unacceptable. His government blames the rebels for both blasts.
