Palestinian medical workers say an Israeli military operation against militants in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 11 Palestinians.
The fighting in Gaza today (Tuesday) was the deadliest in months in the Hamas-controlled territory. It began when Israeli armored vehicles and helicopters entered northern Gaza and exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen.
At least eight of the Palestinians killed in fighting were militants, including a son (Hussam Zahar) of senior Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar. About 40 Palestinians were wounded, both militants and civilians.
A Palestinian sniper also killed an Ecuadorian man today as he worked on an Israeli farm near the Israel-Gaza border. Hamas claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Palestinian officials in the West Bank condemned the Israeli operation. An Israeli government spokesman (Mark Regev) said Israel is acting to protect its civilians from daily rocket barrages by militants.
