중국의 첸 빙더 인민해방군 총참모장은 작년에 중국의 군사비 지출이 450억달러로 늘어난 데 대해 미국이 우려할 필요가 없다고 말했습니다.

미국과 중국의 군사관계는 지난 해 11월 항공모함 키티호크 호 승무원들이 추수감사절을 육지에서 보낼 수 있도록 중국측에 홍콩 기항을 요구했지만, 중국이 거부해 심각한 긴장을 초래했습니다.
첸 상장은, 외국 함정들이 홍콩에 정박할 수 있지만, 적절한 절차를 따르도록 해야 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
중국 관영 신화통신은, 첸 상장이 미국에 대해 타이완과의 군사 유대관계를 단절하고, 타이완에 대한 무기 판매를 중단하라고 촉구했다고 보도했습니다.

One of China's top generals says the United States should not be concerned about increases in China's military spending, which went up to a reported 45 billion dollars last year.
General Chen Bingde (chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army) met in Beijing today (Monday) with Admiral Timothy Keating, head of the U.S. Pacific Command. He said China sees no need to compete militarily with the United States, and that its military development is for defensive purposes.
U.S.-China military relations also came under strain in November when Beijing canceled a port call by a U.S. Navy battle group to Hong Kong. U.S. military officials said they were upset by the incident.
Chen said foreign naval vessels are welcome in Hong Kong, but must be prepared to follow the proper procedures. He did not explain why the U.S. ships were barred last year.
China's official Xinhua news agency says Chen also urged the United States to cut off all military ties with Taiwan and stop weapons sales to the island, which China regards as a renegade province.
