A new survey shows that the Japanese people are split over the nation's resumption of refueling operations in the Indian Ocean in support of the U.S.-led mission in Afghanistan.

The survey, conducted by Kyodo News, showed that just over 44 percent of respondents backed the mission, with nearly 44 percent opposed.

On Friday, Japan's lower house of parliament, which is controlled by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's ruling coalition, approved legislation re-authorizing a Japanese naval mission in support of U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan.

The vote overrides an earlier vote in the opposition-controlled upper house rejecting the move.

Washington immediately welcomed the move, with a State Department spokesman saying the U.S. is grateful for the support Japan has given "over the long haul.
