스리랑카 정부가 타밀호랑이반군에 대한 공세를 강화할 것이라고 말했습니다. 스리랑카 정부는 지난주 만료된 2002년 평화협정을 계속 유지하자는 반군의 제의도 거부했습니다.
스리랑카 국방부 대변인은 11일 반군에 대한 군사작전이 계속될 것이라고 말했습니다. 이 대변인은 또 반군이 전열을 정비하고 테러 공격을 위한 시간을 벌기위해 평화협정을 이용하려 한다고 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 타밀호랑이 반군은 10일 발표한 성명을 통해 평화협정을 지속할 의지가 있다는 입장을 밝힌 바 있습니다. 하지만 한 반군 지도자는 로이터 통신과의 인터뷰에서 전면전을 벌일 준비도 돼있다고 말했습니다.
이와 별도로 스리랑카군은 11일 폭격기 공격으로 반군의 북부 해양 기지 한 곳을 파괴했다고 발표했습니다.
The Sri Lankan government says it will push ahead with an offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels, rejecting a rebel offer of implementing a 2002 ceasefire the government had formally scrapped last week.
A Defense Ministry spokesman (Keheliya Rambukwella) said today (Friday) military operations against the Tigers will continue. He added that the rebels used the ceasefire to regroup and plan more terrorist attacks.
In a statement Thursday, the rebels said they were ready to abide by the terms of the truce. But a rebel leader also told Reuters news service that if thrust upon them, they were ready to fight "a full scale war."
In other news, the Sri Lankan military says its warplanes carried out new raids today (Friday), destroying a rebel sea base in the north. The military says ground forces also targeted rebel positions along several fronts.
