Aid groups are stepping up their efforts to help some 250-thousand people displaced by the post-election violence in Kenya.

The U.N. World Food Program says a convoy of trucks loaded with 670 tons of food left the port town of Mombasa today (Sunday), destined for Nairobi and the western town of Eldoret. Drivers had refused to leave Mombasa until they got a police escort.

Meanwhile, the International Red Cross has appealed for 13 million dollars to help displaced Kenyans get food and shelter. An Red Cross spokeswoman (Anna Schaaf) told VOA that aid workers will visit violence-stricken areas to assess the needs.

Violence triggered by the disputed (December 27th) presidential election has killed at least 350 people across Kenya.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said Saturday he is ready to form a national unity government, but the opposition stood by its demand that he resign.
