Japan has plans to buy so-called greenhouse gas credits from China to help Tokyo meet its obligations to cut emissions in accordance with the Kyoto climate change treaty.
A Japanese newspaper (the Daily Yomiuri) published a report today (Thursday) saying Tokyo will buy greenhouse gas credits that China has earned through emissions-reducing projects funded by Japan.
The trading scheme is part of a mechanism established by the Kyoto Protocol that allows rich nations to pay for pollution-reducing projects in developing nations, in exchange for credit towards their own reduction quotas.
According to the report, the two nations will formally sign the agreement during Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Japan, expected in late March.
The 1997 Kyoto Protocol requires committed nations to meet specific targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, blamed for causing climate change.
