콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관은 유엔 안전보장이사회의 5개 상임이사국과 독일은 이란에 대해 추가 제재를 가하는 데 있어 이견이 있다고 20일 밝혔습니다.
이들 국가들의 외교관들은 이 날 열린 회의에서 이란 제재 여부에 대해 합의하지 못했습니다.
라이스 장관은 그러나 이들 6개국은 이란이 우라늄 농축을 지속하면 제재를, 이를 중지하면 이익을 가한다는 두가지 전략에 대해서는 같은 생각을 갖고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
니콜라스 번스 미국 국무부 차관이 영국, 프랑스, 러시아, 중국, 독일 대표들과 이 날 회의에 참석했습니다.
이들은 이란에 대한 유엔의 세번째 제재 결의안에 대한 마지막 협상을 시도했습니다. 그러나 미국 당국자들은 내년 1월 전에 새로운 결의안이 제출될 가능성은 거의 없다고 밝혔습니다.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says differences remain among the U.N. Security Council's five permanent member countries, plus Germany, on the subject of implementing further sanctions against Iran.
Diplomats from the Council's veto-wielding members and Germany did not resolve their disagreements during a conference call on Thursday.
But Rice says they are united on a two-track strategy that calls for sanctions if Iran continues to enrich uranium and benefits if it stops the process.
U.S. Under Secretary of State (for Political Affairs) Nicholas Burns took part in the conference call with his counterparts from Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany (the so-called P-Five-Plus-One).
The diplomats are attempting to finalize terms of a third U.N. sanctions resolution against Tehran. But U.S. officials have said there is no chance of submitting a new resolution before January.
