European leaders are celebrating the expansion of the European Union's passport-free zone.

Nine of the newest EU member states today (Friday) joined what is known as the Schengen Area, where EU citizens can travel without facing border checks.

In the German town of Zittau, near the border of Poland and the Czech Republic, Chancellor Angela Merkel joined Polish and Czech leaders at ceremonies and called the expansion "historic"

The move integrates mostly former communist-ruled countries more closely into the European community. But critics worry about a rise in crime and illegal immigration.

Some critics expressed fear the expansion could increase tension with countries outside the zone.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Kinga Goncz, whose country just joined the Schengen Area, traveled to Ukraine, which lies outside the zone. Goncz promised to promote close contact with Ukrainian citizens, many of whom are ethnic Hungarians.

The nine new Schengen entrants are the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
