미국 국무부는 김 과장이 이 날부터 23일까지 방북해 영변 핵시설 불능화와 북한의 핵 프로그램 신고 문제를 협의한다고 18일 밝혔습니다.
톰 케이시 국무부 부대변인은 지난 주 영변 원자로의 폐연료봉 인출이 시작됐으며, 내년 초까지 작업이 계속될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
앞서 북 핵 6자회담 중국측 수석대표인 우데웨이 외교부 부부장이 17일부터 북한을 방문 중이며, 우 부부장은 북한 측 수석대표인 김계관 외무성 부상과 만날 예정입니다.

The U.S. State Department's top expert on Korea is heading to the North Korean capital where he will meet with officials and review Pyongyang's progress toward disabling its nuclear weapons facilities.
A State Department spokesman said Sung Kim visited the South Korean capital before heading to the North today (Wednesday).
Under an international agreement, Pyongyang has pledged to dismantle its nuclear facilities and declare all of its nuclear weapons programs by the end of this year.
China's top nuclear envoy Wu Dawei is also in North Korea, where he is scheduled to meet with Pyongyang's chief negotiator Kim Kye Kwan. On Tuesday, Wu visited the North's main nuclear facility, where a U.S. disablement team is removing the reactor's fuel rods.
