Al-Qaida's second-in-command, Ayman al-Zawahri, has accused Arab leaders of betraying the Palestinians by attending last month's U.S.-brokered Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland.
In a new audio recording posted on an Islamic militant Web site today (Friday), al-Zawahri said Arab countries served as witnesses to what he called a "new conspiracy against Palestine" and the countries of Islam. The authenticity of the recording could not be immediately confirmed.
Al-Zawahri urged Muslims to stand with the Palestinians and continue fighting efforts he said are aimed at turning Palestinian lands into a Jewish state. He also condemned
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, describing him as a traitor for leading the
Palestinian delegation to the conference.
Most Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, attended the Annapolis talks. The talks ended with an agreement to relaunch the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
