India is working on a new ballistic missile that is said to be capable of hitting targets at least six thousand kilometers away.

The country's top missile scientist, V.K. Saraswat, today (Wednesday) said the nuclear-capable missile, named Agni-IV, is in the design stage. Its first trial is slated for 2010.

The ballistic missile's declared range is more than double the country's existing nuclear strike capability.

Saraswat says India also is planning further tests of Agni-III, a two-stage ballistic missile with a range of three thousand kilometers. The nuclear-capable weapon is said to be able to reach destinations in China.

Both India and longtime rival Pakistan routinely test their nuclear and conventional arsenals. But the nuclear armed nations -- which have fought three wars since partition in 1947 -- are bound under treaty to notify each other in advance.
