미국 최고의 명문인 하바드대학교는 앞으로 중산층의 학비 부담을 연간 수천달러 경감해주는 대신에 고소득 가정들이 그 결손분을 메꾸도록 할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.
드루 파우스트 하바드대학교 총장은 10일, 이같은 내용의 학비지원계획을 발표했습니다. 이같은 계획은 최근 급격히 상승하는 하바드대학교의 등록금 부담을 경감시키기 위한 노력의 일부입니다.
이에 따라 내년부터 연간 6만달러 이상 버는 가정은 자녀의 등록금으로 연소득중에서 적은 비율만 부담하게 되는데, 부담액은 연소득 12만달러 내지 18만달 사이의 가정에서 부담하는 등록금의 겨우 10% 수준이 될 것으로 보입니다.
현재 연소득 6만달러 미만의 가정의 자녀들에게는 연간 등록금 4만 5천달러를 한 푼도 받지 않고 있습니다.
하버드 대학교는 재산평가에서 주택을 제외하고, 일괄재정지원에서 모든 융자금을 기부금으로 대체할 계획입니다.

Harvard University says it will reduce by thousands of dollars a year the amount middle- and higher-income families must pay for the cost of an education at the Massachusetts school.
Harvard President Drew Faust announced the new financial aid initiative Monday. It is part of a growing effort to counter the rapidly rising costs of tuition at the nation's top universities.
Beginning next school year, families earning more than 60-thousand dollars a year will be expected to pay only a small percentage of their annual income. The contribution will be no more than 10 percent of income earned by families making between 120-thousand and 180-thousand dollars a year.
Currently, families making less than 60-thousand a year are not required to pay anything toward Harvard's more than 45-thousand-dollar annual cost.
