Algeria's interior minister says al-Qaida's North Africa wing is responsible for two deadly car bomb blasts today (Tuesday) outside U.N. offices and another building in the capital, Algiers.
Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni told a news conference he was sure the al-Qaida group was behind the blasts, though there has been no claim of responsibility.
Zerhouni says 22 people died in the blasts. Hospital officials have put the death toll at more than 60.
The United Nations says a number of U.N. staff members died in the blasts, which destroyed the offices of the U.N. Development Program and damaged the offices of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
A UNHCR official in Geneva says at least 12 U.N. staff members are missing.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon condemned the attack in the "strongest possible terms."
Officials say the other blast struck a school bus near the constitutional court in Algiers, killing and wounding many students.
