아제르바이잔의 일간신문, ‘아자들리크’의 수석 편집인, ‘가니맛 자이드’씨는 아제르바이잔 법원에 의해 재판을 받기전 2개월간 구금형에 처해졌습니다. 아제르바이잔 정부에 비판적인 아자들리크신문의 편집인인 ‘자이드’씨는 사무실부근 길거리에서 사소한 언쟁을 벌인 혐의로 최고 6년까지의 투옥형을 선고받을 위험에 처해있습니다. 지난 9월이래 자이드씨는 아제르바이잔 당국에 의해 두건의 명예훼손 소송을 제기당했습니다.
미국 국무부의 ‘션 맥코맥’대변인은 자히드씨의 구금은 최근 몇달동안 여러건의 언론인구타사건과 언론계 인사들에 대한 법적 소송과 명예훼손등의 형사혐의들로 인한 투옥이 꼬리를 물고있는 가운데 취해졌다고 지적하는 성명을 발표했습니다. 이 성명은 아제르바이잔에서 독자적인 친 야당언론들을 겨냥한 고의적 압력이 놀랄만큼 늘어나는 추세임을 말해준다고 덧붙였습니다.
10월 30일, 아제르바이잔의 두 독자적인 신문의 편집인인 ‘이눌라 화툴이에브’씨는 아제르바이잔 법원에 의해 8년반의 투옥형을 선고받았습니다. ‘파눌라에프’편집인은 테러리즘 도발행위와 신문지상을통한 인종간의 분규를 선동한 혐의를 받고 있습니다.
두신문 모두, 아제르바이잔 당국에 의해 폐쇄되었습니다. 일간신문, ‘이디알’사의 편집장인 ‘나짐 굴리예프’씨는 이달초 아제르바이잔 교통경찰부서의 명예를 훼손한 혐의로 2년반의 징역형을 선고받았습니다. 굴리예프씨의 신문은 교통경찰내부의 부패상에 관해 두건의 기사를 게제했었습니다.
아제르바이잔 인민전선당의 당수인 ‘알리케르임리’씨는 ‘가니맛 자이드’편집인에 대한 법절차를 가리켜 아제르바이잔국내 정치적 이견에 대한 공격이라고 규탄했습니다.
아제르바이잔주재 ‘앤 덜스’ 미국대사도 자이드편집인의 구금을 규탄했습니다.
미국은 ‘아자들리크’신문 편집장의 체포에 우려하고 있다면서, 언론을 겨냥한 것이 분명한 이같은 운동은 세계의 이목앞에 자체 이미지를 손상시킬뿐이라고 ‘덜스’대사는 말했습니다.
아제르바이잔의 장래를 확신하면서, 조국이 진정으로 강력하고 진정으로 현대화된, 독립적이고 민주적인 국가로 발전하길 원하는 애국적인 아제르바이잔인들은 그같은 정부의 행동이 중단 되길 미국과 함께 촉구할 것이라고 ‘덜스’대사는 강조했습니다.

Ganimat Zahid [gah-nee-maht zah-eed], chief editor of the newspaper Azadliq (ah-zahd-LEEK) has been given two months of pre-trial detention by an Azerbaijan court. Mr. Zahid, whose newspaper is routinely critical of the Azerbaijani government, is facing up to six years in prison on charges stemming from an altercation on the street near his office. Since September, Mr. Zahid has been the target of two defamation suits by Azerbaijan authorities.
U.S. Statement spokesman Sean McCormack issued a statement saying Mr. Zahid's detention comes against the backdrop of numerous instances in recent months of beatings of journalists, law suits and imprisonment of media representatives on criminal defamation and other charges. The statement added that these events suggest an alarming trend of deliberate pressure against the independent and pro-opposition media.
On October 30th, Eynulla Fatullayev (EH-nool-ah FAH-tool-eh-ev), editor of two independent Azerbaijan newspapers, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison by an Azerbaijan court. Mr. Fatullayev was accused of provoking terrorism and inciting ethnic conflict in his publications.
Both of his newspapers were shut down by Azerbaijan authorities. Nazim Guliyev (nah-zeem goo-lee-yev), editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Ideal,(id-ee-AHL) was sentenced earlier this month to an two-and-a-half year prison term for allegedly defaming Azerbaijan's traffic police department. Mr. Guliyev's paper had published two articles on corruption within the department.
Ali Kerimli (ah-lee kehr-im-lee) is the leader of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party. He condemned the proceedings against Ganimat Zahid as an attack on political dissent in Azerbaijan:
The way to crush opposition is to first crush the free press.
U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse commented on the detention of Mr. Zahid:
Of course we are concerned about the arrest of the Azadliq newspaper editor.
U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse said, this apparent campaign against the press only weakens Azerbaijan, and weakens, damages its image in the eyes of the world. Ms. Derse said that patriotic Azerbaijanis, who believe in their country's future and want to see it develop as a truly strong, truly independent, truly modern, and truly democratic state will join the United States in calling for this to stop.
