방글라데시 정부는 지난 주 남부 지역을 강차한 강력한 사이클론, 즉 대폭풍으로 적어도 2천 3백명이 사망했다고 말했으나 구호 단체들은 사망자 수가 훨씬 더 많을 수도 있다고 전했습니다.
방글라데시 적신월 사는 18일 접근이 어려운 지역들에서 점점 더 많은 희생자들이 발견되자 이번 사이클론으로 인한 사망자 수는 만명에 달할 수도 있다고 말했습니다.
당국자들은 사이클론 시드로로 인해 수십만채의 가옥들이 파괴되고 도로가 침수됐으며 전기와 통신이 두절됐다고 전했습니다. 이같은 파손으로 국내외 구호 단체들의 피해지역에 대한 접근을 더욱 어렵게 만들고 있습니다.
방글라데시는 구호 노력을 돕기 위해 군 선박과 헬기들을 파견했으며 미군 선박 역시 구호 활동을 돕기 위해 방글라데시로 향하고 있습니다. 미국 정부는 일차 원조로 2백 여만 달러를 제공했다고 밝혔습니다.

The Bangladeshi government says 23-hundred people were killed by the powerful cyclone that battered the south of the country last week, but aid organizations say the toll could be much higher.
The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society said today (Sunday) the death toll could reach 10-thousand, after more victims are discovered in hard-to-reach areas.
Authorities say Cyclone Sidr destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, washed away roads and cut off electricity and telecommunications. The damage has made it difficult for local and international aid agencies to reach affected areas.
Bangladesh has deployed military ships and helicopters to help the relief efforts.
U.S. military ships also are heading to Bangladesh to assist in relief operations. The U.S. government says it has provided more than two million dollars in initial aid and is also airlifting plastic sheeting, hygiene kits and other supplies for survivors.
