파키스탄 동부 라호르의 고위 경찰 관리는 이 날 부토 전 총리에 대한 구금 명령은 철회됐으며, 부토 전 총리는 제재 없이 이동할 수 있다고 밝혔습니다. 그러나 이 당국자는 부토 전 총리의 안전을 위해 경찰 병력은 부토 전 총리의 가택 밖에 계속 머물 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
파키스탄 당국은 부토 전 총리가 라호르에서 수도 이슬라마바드로 페르베르 무샤라프 대통령의 비상사태 선포에 저항하는 시위를 하기 위해 이동하는 것을 막으려고 지난 12일 구금 명령을 내렸었습니다.
한편 무샤라프 대통령은 이슬라마바드에서 과도정부를 출범시켰습니다. 이 과도정부는 내년 1월9일로 예정된 총선을 주관할 예정입니다.
한편, 존 네그로폰테 미국 국무부 부장관은 16일 파키스탄에 도착해 비상사태 선포에 대한 미국 정부의 우려를 전할 예정입니다.
Pakistani authorities have released former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto from house arrest hours before a new caretaker prime minister took office today (Friday).
A senior police official in the eastern city of Lahore says the detention order against Ms. Bhutto has been withdrawn and that she is allowed to move without restrictions. But the official said police will remain outside her home for her protection.
Authorities had issued the detention order late Monday to prevent Ms. Bhutto from leading a mass caravan from Lahore to the capital, Islamabad, to protest President Pervez Musharraf's emergency rule.
In Islamabad, President Musharraf presided over the swearing-in ceremony for a new caretaker government headed by a close ally, (Senate chairman Mohammedmian Soomro).
The caretaker government is to oversee parliamentary elections General Musharraf has promised to hold by January ninth.
Meanwhile, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte is due to arrive in Pakistan today to press U.S concerns about emergency rule.
