A top U.S. diplomat arrived in Pakistan today (Friday) to press military leader President Pervez Musharraf to lift emergency rule and guarantee democratic elections set for early January.

Hours after his arrival, Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte telephoned opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto -- who has called on General Musharraf to resign.

During their conversation, Mr. Negroponte repeated the U.S. position that moderate political forces must work together to get Pakistan back to constitutional rule. He also said he wanted Ms. Bhutto's opinion on the political crisis.

Negroponte also met with the head of Pakistan's National Security Council, Tariq Aziz.

Negroponte is expected to meet with General Musharraf on Saturday.

The United States has repeatedly called on President Musharraf to end the state of emergency, restore the constitution and resign as army chief. But U.S. officials also say they consider the military leader a key ally in the war on terror, having given more than 10 billion dollars in mostly military aid since 2001.
