Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has rejected a new caretaker government and called on opposition parties to unite against military leader President Pervez Musharraf.

Speaking after her release from house arrest in Lahore, Ms. Bhutto said the new interim government charged with overseeing general elections is not acceptable. She said the ballot, set for early January, cannot be free or fair if held under the currency state of emergency.

Also today (Friday), General Musharraf swore in a new interim cabinet including Senate Chairman Mohammadmian Soomro, who will lead the caretaker government. Some anti-government protests were held today (Friday) in Peshawar and elsewhere -- but were broken up by police.

Meanwhile, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte arrived in Pakistan for talks with President Musharraf. He says the United States wants to work with the government, Pakistani people and politicians to put the political process back on track.

It is not clear if Mr. Negroponte will also meet with Ms. Bhutto.

The United States has repeatedly called on General Musharraf to lift emergency rule, restore the constitution and resign as army chief.
