The U.S. State Department is expected to announce today (Friday) that it will not force diplomats to serve at its embassy in Iraq, because it has enough volunteers to fill vacancies.
The department created an uproar among the diplomatic service last month when it informed between 200 to 300 people that they were prime candidates to fill 48 positions if no volunteers stepped forward. They faced disciplinary action, including dismissal, if they refused the posting.
Hundreds of diplomats held an emotional meeting with State Department officials in Washington about the forced assignments in a war zone. One veteran diplomat described it as "a potential death sentence."
The firestorm led Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to remind diplomatic officers they signed an oath to serve anywhere in the world.
