기존의 테러대책특별조치법안은 이번달 시한이 만료됩니다. 일본의 야당들은 이 법안이 유엔의 임무와 일본의 평화헌법에 위배되는 것이라며 반대해왔습니다.
새 테러대책특별조치법안은 일본 하원 의회에서는 통과됐지만 야당들은 상원에서 막을 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 미국은 일본이 인도양에서 자국 해군 지원을 계속해줄 것을 촉구해왔습니다.

Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is on his way to Washington to meet with President Bush. It is his first overseas visit since taking office in September.
When the two meet at the White House on Friday, Mr. Fukuda is widely expected to assure Mr. Bush that his government is doing all it can to renew a Japanese naval refueling mission that supported U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
Legislation for the mission expired this month. Japan's opposition argues the mission lacks a U.N. mandate and violates the nation's pacifist constitution.
A bill to renew the naval mission has passed Japan's lower house of parliament. But the opposition says it will block the legislation in the upper house.
The U.S. has urged Japan to continue its naval support operations in the Indian Ocean.
