스티븐 영 대만주재 미국 대표는 타이완의유 가입에 관한 불필요하고 도움이 안되는 국민투표 실시에 대한 워싱턴 당국의 반대입장을 다시 확인했습니다.
미국의 타이완 주재 대사관격인 미국타이완협회 스티븐 영 대표는 9일, 타이완의 유엔가입 국민투표는 타이완과 미국간의 상호신뢰를 손상시킬 수 있다고 지적하면서 이같이 미국 입장을 재확인했으나 이와 관련한 응징조치에 관해서는 언급하지 않았습니다.
영 대표는 또 타이완의 국민투표가 타이완과 본토 중국간의 안정된 관계를 손상시키는 위협이 될 수도 있다고 지적했습니다.
이보다 앞서 미국의 존 네그로폰테 국무부 부장관도 타이완 유엔가입 국민투표에 대한 미국의 입장을 지난 8월에 밝힌 바 있으나 천수이볜 타이완 총통은 국민투표가 타이완의 완전한 독립을 향한 움직은 아니라면서 미국의 견해를 일축했습니다.
The United States de facto representative to Taiwan has reiterated Washington's opposition to what he called an unnecessary and unhelpful referendum on U.N. membership.
American Institute in Taiwan director Stephen Young stopped short of specifying punitive measures, but said (Friday) the referendum could undermine mutual trust between Taipei and Washington.
Young added that the measure also threatens to undermine stability between Taiwan and China.
His comments echo those made by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte in August. Negroponte said U.S. officials are concerned by what they see as a step toward a declaration of independence for Taiwan.
But Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has rejected this view and says the referendum is not a move toward full independence.
The referendum, scheduled for March, has been strongly criticized by China -- which considers Taiwan a renegade province and has threatened the use of military force if the island ever declares independence.
