미국을 방문중인 니콜라 사르코지 프랑스 대통령은 7일, 미국 의회 상하원 합동회의에서 행한 연설에서 프랑스는 이라크와 아프가니스탄에서 전개되고 있는 테러와 이란의 핵확산과 맞서 싸우고 있는 미국을 지지할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
사르코지 대통령은 이날 연설에서 앞으로 미국은 프랑스의 도움을 기대할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
사르코지 대통령은 또한 미국과 프랑스는 자유와 민주주의 가치관과 이념을 수호하고 증진하기 위해 힘을 합해 싸워 나가야 할 것이라고 말했습니다. 사르코지 대통령은 미국과 프랑스의 오랜 우정을 강조하며, 2차 세계대전 중 미군들의 고귀한 희생에 경의를 표했습니다.
이날 의회 연설을 마치고 사르코지 대통령은 조지 부시 대통령과 함께 조지 워싱턴 미국 초대 대통령의 생가인 워싱턴 DC 인근의 마운트 버논을 방문했습니다.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress that his country will stand by Washington in the fight against terror in Afghanistan and nuclear proliferation in Iran.
During his address today (Wednesday), Mr. Sarkozy said America can count on France.
The French president told lawmakers that America and France must fight together to defend and promote values and ideals of freedom and democracy.
Mr. Sarkozy also paid tribute to American sacrifices in World War Two.
After his address, Mr. Sarkozy will travel with President Bush to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, the first U.S. president. They will hold talks on the situation in Afghanistan, Iran's nuclear program, genocide in Darfur, and democratic change in Burma.
