콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무부 장관은 이라크로 강제 발령 받은 후 항의하는 외교관들은 자신들의 국가와 동료에 대한 의무를 다시 생각해보라고 엄포를 놓았습니다.
라이스 장관은 2일 터키 방문길에 경유지인 아일랜드에서 많은 외교관들이 이라크에서 근무하길 자원했었다고 기자들에게 말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 이라크 근무와 같은 어려운 업무의 부담은 모든 외교관들이 서로 덜어주어야 한다고 덧붙혔습니다.
미국 국무부는 지난주 200에서 300명의 외교관들에게 50명 정도 결원이 생긴 이라크 공관 근무의 유력 후보로 선정되었음을 통보했습니다. 지난달 31일 수백명의 외교관들은 워싱턴의 당국자들과 수시간 동안 회의를 하며 강제 발령에 대해 불만을 토로했습니다. 한 고참 외교관은 이라크 강제 발령은 잠재적인 사형선고나 마찬가지라고 했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says U.S. diplomats angered about being forced to serve in Iraq should think about their obligations to the United States and their colleagues.
Rice told reporters during a stopover in Ireland today (Friday) that many Foreign Service officers have volunteered to serve in Iraq. She says diplomats should make sure "these difficult assignments" are shared within the service.
The State Department informed diplomats last week that 200 to 300 people will be notified that they are prime candidates to fill roughly 50 vacancies in Iraq. Hundreds of diplomats held an emotional hour-long meeting with officials in Washington on Wednesday about the forced assignments.
One State Department veteran (Jack Crotty) said a forced assignment in Iraq is, in his words, "a potential death sentence."
