Russia says it has successfully test fired missile interceptors from a site in neighboring Kazakhstan.
A Russian military spokesman says the short-range interceptor was fired today (Tuesday) at a mock target to test performance characteristics of the missile.
The test comes during Russian-American tensions over a U.S. plan to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a guidance radar system in the Czech Republic.
Washington says its interceptor system is aimed at protecting the United States and its European allies from missile attacks by rogue states such as North Korea and Iran.
Russia says the U.S. deployment will destabilize eastern Europe and lead to a new arms race.
On Monday, Russia tested an SS-18 intercontinental ballistic missile, which was launched from Kazakhstan and landed on Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
