중국 당국은 그동안 멸종된 것으로 알려졌던 호랑이가 발견된 것으로 알려진 북부 중국에 전문가들로 구성된 조사단을 파견하고, 이 지역에서 호랑이 수렵을 금지시켰습니다.
산시성 산간지역에 사는 한 농부는 이달 초에 당국이 남부 중국 호랑이일 것으로 판단하고 있는 한 야생동물을 촬영하는데 성공했습니다.
현재 중국에서는 소수의 호랑이 만이 사람들의 포획을 피해 살아 있습니다. 지난 1950년대까지만 해도 중국에는 4천마리 정도의 남중국 호랑이 아종이 서식하고 있었습니다. 그러나 지난 20년동안 야생에서 남중국 호랑이는 자취를 감추었습니다.
중국 산림당국은 호랑이가 발견된 것으로 알려진 이 산간지역에서 보다 많은 호랑이 증거를 찾고 있습니다.

Chinese authorities have dispatched a team of experts and banned hunting in an area of Northern China where an endangered tiger, believed extinct in the wild, may have been spotted earlier this month.
A farmer in the mountainous Shaanxi province photographed what authorities believe to be a South China tiger.
Only a handful of the big cats survive in captivity. There were believed to be only about four thousand of the South China sub-species of tiger in the 1950s. No sightings of a South China tiger have been made in the wild in more than 20 years.
Chinese forestry officials will look for more evidence of the tiger in the mountainous countryside near where it was reported.
