President Bush sought to reassure residents of Southern California they are not alone, pledging federal money would be made available to homeowners in seven fire-ravaged counties.
Mr. Bush spoke today (Thursday) in California after a helicopter tour of the damaged area with (California) Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and a visit to a burned-out neighborhood near San Diego.
The fires have destroyed more than one thousand homes and forced the evacuation of a half-million people.
Mr. Bush has declared the fires a "major disaster."
The hot, dry winds that fueled the fires have died down -- allowing firefighters to get ahead of the 15 wildfires that have been burning since Sunday.
Officials say two burned bodies were found today in a home in the San Diego area, bringing the death toll from the wildfires to at least three. Five other people died during the evacuation.
