국제 언론 단체인 국경없는 기자들은 아프리카의 에리트리아가 북한을 제치고 올해 최악의 언론자유 국가로 선정됐다고 밝혔습니다.
프랑스 파리에 본부를 둔 국경없는 기자들은 16일 연례 세계언론자유지수 발표를 통해, 에리트리아는 언론의 민간 소유를 금지하고 정부에 비판적인 언론인들을 투옥하고 있다면서, 투옥된 언론인 가운데 적어도 4명이 사망했다고 지적했습니다.
이밖에도 쿠바와 이란, 투르크메니스탄 등이 최악의 언론자유국가로 지목됐습니다.
A media advocacy group says Eritrea has replaced North Korea as the world's worst country for freedom of the press.
Reporters Without Borders released its annual World Press Freedom index today (Tuesday). The Paris-based group says Eritrea earned its last-place ranking by banning privately-owned media and throwing journalists who
criticize the government in prison, where at least four of them have died.
The group says it is particuarly disturbed by the situation in Burma, which ranked 164th on the index. It says the military government's crackdown on protests there bodes poorly for the future of basic freedoms in the country.
The top five countries in the index are all from Europe, with Iceland ranked at the top, followed by Norway, Estonia, Slovakia and Belgium.
The bottom five, in descending order, are Cuba, Iran, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea.
