군 당국은 이날 얄라 국립공원 인근의 탈가스만카다에서 타밀 호랑이 반군이 정부군 분견대를 선제공격했다고 밝혔습니다. 얄라지역은 남부 스리랑카의 야생 동물 보호구역으로 주요 관광지입니다.
관계자들은 아직 정확한 사상자수에 대해서는 보고를 받지 못했다고 밝히고, 증원군을 현지로 파견했다고 말했습니다.
이날의 공격은 정부군과 반군의 전투가 주로 스리랑카의 북부와 동부에 한정됐던 지금까지의 경우와는 달리 남부에서 일어난 특이한 경우입니다.

Tamil Tiger rebels have launched a rare attack against government forces in southern Sri Lanka.
Military officials say rebels today (Monday) attacked a military detachment at Thalgasmankada close to the Yala National Park. Yala is a wildlife sanctuary and a premier tourist destination in southeastern Sri Lanka.
Officials say they do not yet have any reports of casualties, but have sent military re-enforcements to the area.
Today's (Monday's) attack is unusual since most of the conflict between rebels and government forces have been confined to the
island's north and east.
Minority ethnic Tamils have been fighting for an independent state in Sri Lanka's north and east since 1983. Nearly 70-thousand people have died in the fighting, including five-thousand people killed since a ceasefire broke down last year.
