인도에 일관제철소 건설사업을 추진중인 한국의 포스코 사 직원4명이 제철소 건설에 반대하는 현지 주민들에 의해 억류됐습니다.
인도 경찰은 13일 오전에, 동부 오리사 주 부바네스와르 자가트싱푸르에서 송전 철탑 설치 경로 확인차 현장조사에 나섰던 한국인 직원 3명과 현지인 1명 등 4명이 현지 주민들에 의해 억류됐다고 밝혔습니다.
억류됐던 직원들은 이날 오후에 모두 무사히 풀려났습니다.
앞서 현지 주민들은 지난 5월에도 부지 매입 관련 업무를 담당하던 포스코 현지인 직원들을 억류했다가 풀어준 바 있습니다. 현지 제철소 건설에 반대하는 주민들은 이곳에 제철소가 들어서면 생활터전을 잃고 유리하게 될 것이라고 반발해 왔습니다.
포스코는 철광석 매장량 세계 5위인 인도 오리사주에 오는 2020년까지 총 120억달러를 투입해 1,200만톤 규모의 일관제철소를 건설할 계획입니다.
Police in eastern India say activists opposed to the construction of a steel company briefly abducted four officials, including three South Koreans, who worked for the firm, POSCO.
Authorities say the four were kidnapped in Orissa state after traveling to the area for survey work. They were released shortly after receiving a written assurance by the seized officials that they would not visit the area again.
In May, three POSCO employees were held by the same activists for almost a day.
The South Korean steel-giant POSCO is setting up a 12 billion-dollar steel plant 100 kilometers northwest of the Orissa state capital, Bhubaneshwar. That project is slated to be the single largest foreign direct investment in India.
Opponents say the plant will displace thousands of villagers. They also argue that it should not be set up on fertile land.
