이란계미국인위원회가 주도하는 연합단체는 12일, 미국 연방의회에 보낸 서한에서 이란 민주화 노력에 대한 미국의 재정지원은 이란내 모든 비정부기관들을 위험에 빠뜨리는 것이라고 지적하면서 이같이 촉구했습니다.
이 서한은 미 국무부의 민주주의 촉진계획이 이란 당국으로 하여금 개혁성향이나 친서방 성향의 민간단체들을 외국의 첩자이며 반역자로 낙인찍도록 만든다고 지적했습니다.

Iranian-American groups and human rights activists are asking the United States to stop funding pro-democracy efforts in Iran, arguing that the programs do more harm than good.
A coalition headed by the National Iranian American Council sent a letter to Congress (Thursday) saying the funding puts all Iranian non-governmental groups at risk. The letter asks that the 75 million dollars proposed for this coming fiscal year be put to better use.
The letter argues that the U.S. State Department's "democracy promotion" has let Iranian authorities label pro-reform or pro-Western groups as foreign agents and traitors. The appeal also notes that the recent detentions of Iranian-American scholars, journalists and others is widely viewed as a response to U.S. efforts.
