Burma's military government has published reports critical of Buddhist monks suspected of participating in pro-democracy protests in Rangoon last month.

A state-run newspaper ("New Light of Myanmar"), says authorities found weapons and pornography in several Buddhist monasteries raided after the protests.

The government says authorities searched least 18 pagodas in Rangoon.

There is no way of independently verifying the newspaper report.

Monks are highly revered in the Buddhist country. Tens of thousands of them marched in Rangoon and Mandalay last month to call for freedom and democracy. Their presence on the streets empowered lay civilians, who normally avoid challenging the heavy-handed military government.

Security forces stopped the protests by opening fire on the monks and other activists. Several people were killed.

Since then, the Burmese government has accused foreign powers of stirring up dissent inside the country and warned people against taking to the streets again.
