이에 앞서 하임 라몬 이스라엘 부총리는 이스라엘이 동예루살렘의 일부 유대인지역을 병합하는 대가로 동예루살렘의 일부지역을 팔레스타인에 반환하는 방안을 검토하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
라몬 이스라엘 부총리는 8일, 이스라엘 라디오와의 회견에서 동예루살렘의 아랍인 거주지역 등을 팔레스타인측에 넘길 수 있다는 뜻을 팔레스타인 관리들에게 전했다고 말했습니다. 그는 그러나 이슬람 성지인 알-아크사 사원 부지와 유대인의 성지인 템플 마운트가 포함되는 구 시가지 구역은 반환대상에서 제외돼야 한다는 입장을 밝혔습니다.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says he will push to revive peace talks with the Palestinians.
Laying out his agenda for the year ahead, during the opening session of the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) today (Monday), Mr. Olmert said he would not use excuses to avoid talks.
He also said the current Palestinian leadership
does not support terrorism and, in his words, is ready to bring about change.
The prime minister's speech was frequently interrupted by opposition lawmakers.
Earlier today (Monday), Israeli Vice Prime Minister Haim Ramon said the government is considering a deal in which Israel turns over control of some Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem to the Palestinians, in exchange for international recognition of Israel's annexation of Jewish neighborhoods.
