버마 관영 매체는 군사정부가 버마 전역의 불교 사원에 대해 수천 달러를 기부했다고 밝혔습니다.
버마 관영 신문 '뉴 라이트 오브 미얀마'는 8일 버마 정부가 불교 사원 50여 곳에 대해 식량과 의료 장비 등도 지원했다며 이같이 보도했습니다.
그러나 버마의 승려들은 군사정부의 기부를 거부하고, 지난 달 45년간 폭압정치에 반대하는 시위를 벌였습니다. 승려들은 옛 수도 양곤과 만달레이 등에서의 반정부 대규모 시위를 주도했습니다.
버마 군사정부는 시위를 주도한 승려 4명을 수색하고 있다고 밝혔습니다. 그 가운데 한 명의승려인 아신 감비야 씨는 미국의 소리 방송과의 인터뷰에서 군사 정부는 정부의 기부금을 수락하라고 승려들을 협박하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
이 승려는 또 승려들은 정부의 기부금을 더럽다고 생각하고 있으며, 사용하는 것을 거부할 것이라고 말했습니다.
앞서 버마 군사정부는 지난달 옛 수도 양곤에서 벌어진 민주주의 시위대에 가담한 것으로 추정되는 불교 승려들에 대해 비판적인 기사를 보도했었습니다.
Burma's state-controlled media say the military government has donated thousands of dollars to Buddhist monasteries across the country.
"The New Light of Myanmar" newspaper says the government has also given food and medical supplies to the 50 monasteries.
Buddhist monks began boycotting military donations last month to protest 45 years of oppressive military rule. They also led huge demonstrations against the government, with marches in Rangoon, Mandalay and other cities. Police stopped the demonstrations by arresting and beating protesters, and by using deadly gunfire.
The government says it is searching for four monks suspected of leading the protests. One of the monks, Ashin Gambiya, told VOA the Buddhist clergy was intimidated into accepting the government's money, despite the boycott.
He says the monks consider the money to be dirty, so they will put it aside and refuse to use it.
