미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관이 어제(5일) 마약밀매와의 전쟁 등 국제범죄 대처방안을 논의하기 위해 페루를 방문했습니다.
페루 국방부는 알란 와그너 국방장관이 게이츠 장관과의 회담에서 마약 밀매단 퇴치에 대한 세부적인 계획을 제의하고 미국의 지원을 요청할 계획이라고 말했습니다.
페루 국방부의 한 관리는 기자들에게 페루가 마약밀매 퇴치를 위한 순찰 강화를 위해 미국으로부터 강에서 사용할 수 있는 정찰용 선박을 구입하길 원하고 있다고 말했습니다. 페루에서는 많은 코카인이 국내 강에서 활동하는 작은 선박 등을 통해 거래되고 있습니다.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates visited Peru Friday to discuss the fight against drug trafficking and other international crimes.
Officials with Peru's defense ministry said Defense Minister Allan Wagner would present specific plans and make specific requests for assistance during his meeting with the U.S. delegation.
An official told reporters Peru wants to buy police boats from the United States to increase counter-narcotics patrols on the country's rivers, because much of the cocaine produced in Peru is smuggled out by boat.
Gates said he went to Peru to listen and to seek new ways the United States can work with Peru to resolve shared problems.
