Japan's parliament has elected Yasuo Fukuda as the country's new prime minister.
Mr. Fukuda is known as being a quiet compromiser, and has promised to bring stability and moderation to Japan's turbulent politics.
During a vote today (Tuesday) in the lower house of Japan's parliament, Mr. Fukuda
received 338 votes, while main opposition leader Ichiro Ozawa garnered 117 votes.
The upper house, which is dominated by the opposition, voted in favor of Ozawa. But the lower house vote holds the biggest sway in determining who will serve as prime minister.
Mr. Fukuda is expected to name members of his new Cabinet later today and try to help his ruling Liberal Democratic Party recover from a series of scandals and an election defeat.
Japanese media have already reported that he will appoint former defense minister
Masahiko Komura to the post of foreign minister and Shigeru Ishiba to the post of defense minister.
