The U.S. military says Iraqi and coalition forces have killed 33 insurgents in an operation north of Baghdad.
A military statement today (Tuesday) said the pre-dawn assault in the town of Gobia involved hundreds soldiers and several attack helicopters. It said the operation reopened a major irrigation canal that had been seized by gunmen and recovered three caches of weapons, ammunition and explosives.
In Karbala, to the south, thousands of Shi'ite pilgrims began a major religious festival to mark the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi, the 12th and last Shi'ite imam.
The celebration got underway today (Tuesday) under the watchful eyes of additional Iraqi security forces deployed to prevent terrorist attacks on civilians during the two-day festival.
