버마 정부의 연료비 인상에 반발한 시위가 몇 일 동안 계속되자 버마의 수도 랑군에서는 민간인 차림의 경찰관들이 거리를 순찰하고 있습니다.
전국적으로 치안이 강화된 26일 랑군 거리는 한산하지만 긴장감이 감도는 모습을 보였습니다.
버마 당국은 지난 주 시위에 참가한 49명 이상을 구금했다고 밝혔습니다. 이런 가운데 저명한 친민주주의 지도자인 민 코 나잉을 포함해 당국에 구금된 13명의 지도급 반체제인사들이 랑군 외곽의 악명높은 인세인 교도소로 이송됐다는 보도가 전해지고 있습니다. 이들은 최고 20년 구형에 처해질 수 있습니다.
이들은 이달 초 버마군부가 국영 정유소의 연료비를 두배로 인상하겠다고 결정하자 이에 항의해 시위를 벌였습니다.
이 같은 연료비 인상으로 버마의 많은 가난한 서민들은 가스비와 대중 교통비 인상으로 생활에 큰 타격을 받게됐습니다.

Plainclothes police officers in Burma are patrolling the country's largest city, Rangoon, following days of public protests against the high price of fuel.
The streets of the commercial capital were calm but tense today (Sunday) as security officials fanned out across the city.
Burmese authorities say they have detained at least 49 people who took part in the protests over the past week.
Reports say 13 leading activists who were detained in the crackdown have been moved to Burma's notorious Insein prison, outside Rangoon. Among them is prominent pro-democracy leader Min Ko Naing. The activists could face up to 20 years in prison.
The activists have been protesting a decision by Burma's military government to double fuel prices at state-owned gas stations.
