아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의가 오는 9월 호주의 시드니에서 열릴 예정인 가운데 호주 뉴사우스웨일즈 주당국이 최근 불발로 끝난 영국의 폭탄테러에 자극 받아 치안을 더욱 강화하고 있습니다. 뉴사우스웨일즈주는 치안강화 조치의 하나로 시드니의 열차와 버스 안에 수 백개의 감시카메라를 추가로 설치할 계획입니다.
오는 9월 호주 시드니에서 열리는 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의를 앞두고 수 백개의 고화질(HD) 감시카메라가 시드니의 교통망에 설치될 예정입니다.
시드니의 주요 기차역에 설치된 보안카메라는 현재 얼굴을 인식할 수 있는 첨단 카메라로 교체되고 있습니다. 높은 해상도를 지니고 있는 얼굴인식 카메라는 2년 전 영국 런던에서 발생한 폭탄테러 용의자를 추적하는 데 크게 기여한 것으로 입증된 바 있습니다. 뉴사우스웨일스주는 이번 치안강화에 총 2천 9백만 달러의 경비를 투입할 예정입니다.

호주의 마이크 스미스 대테러 담당 대사는 이런 치안활동 계획이 성과를 거둘 것이라고 말합니다.
스미스 대사는 APEC 정상회의와 같이 많은 사람들이 모이는 곳에는 항상 테러위협이 상존하고, 특히 대통령과 총리 같은 최고위급 인사들이 모이는 자리는 그 가능성이 더 높다고 말합니다. 스미스 대사는 그러나 누구나 그런 위협을 인지하고 있고 정부당국은 최고로 그런 위협을 탐지하고 있다며, 호주 연방경찰과 뉴사우스웨일스주 경찰은 어떤 사태에도 이를 차단할 수 있을 것이라며 자신감을 보였습니다.
아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의가 열리는 주에 시드니 일원에는 3천명 이상의 경찰병력이 배치될 예정입니다.
시드니 상공을 지나는 여객기들은 우회해서 비행해야 하며, 시드니항으로 들어오는 여객선 등 선박들은 해양경찰의 엄중한 검색을 받게 됩니다.
호주의 존 하워드 총리는 극단주의 과격세력의 점증하는 공격 위협에도 불구하고 호주는 APEC 정상회의와 같은 대규모 행사를 개최하는 데 흔들림이 없을 것이라고 말했습니다.
호주는 미국과 한국, 중국, 일본 등 20개 이상 나라가 참여하는 APEC 정상회의에 앞서 뉴사우스웨일즈 주내 기차와 버스안에 감시카메라 수 백개를 추가 설치할 예정입니다.
호주는 또 공공기관과 민간을 연결하는 폐쇄회로 텔레비전 카메라를 설치하는 등 시내 전체를 그물망처럼 연결하는 디지털 네트워크를 구축할 예정입니다. 호주는 이 계획의 일환으로 주요 기차역에 사람의 얼굴을 인식할 수 있는 첨단 카메라를 설치할 예정입니다. 이 카메라는 지난 2005년 런던 폭탄테러사건의 범인추적에 큰 도움을 준 바 있습니다.

The New South Wales state government in Australia is boosting security at this year's APEC summit in light of the foiled attacks in Britain. Hundreds of additional surveillance cameras will be installed on trains and buses. Authorities are building a citywide digital network linking public and private closed-circuit TV cameras. Hundreds of high-definition surveillance cameras are being installed on Sydney's transportation network ahead of September's summit in Australia's biggest city.
Security cameras at major railway stations are being upgraded with facial-recognition technology, which proved to be effective in the aftermath of the London bombings two years ago.
The security upgrade will cost $29 million.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit will bring together leaders from more than 20 countries, including the United States, China and Japan. APEC promotes trade and economic coordination along the Pacific Rim.
Security measures will be the strictest Sydney has ever seen and will be made even more stringent following foiled car bombings in Britain earlier this month.
Australia's ambassador for counter-terrorism, Mike Smith, thinks the security operation will do its job.
"There's always a threat to any large gathering of people like that - like the APEC conference - and particularly a gathering which brings together very senior figures - presidents and prime ministers and so on," Smith said. "So, everyone's aware of that and of course the authorities are ultra aware of it. The police here in New South Wales, ASIO, the Australian federal police. So, you know I am pretty confident that they will be able to prevent anything from happening."
More than 3,000 police will be deployed in and around Sydney during the week of the conference.
Aircraft will be barred from flying above the city and harbor ferries will be monitored.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard says his country should not be deterred from hosting major events such as the APEC summit despite growing fears of attacks by extremists.
