아프가니스탄의 하미드 카르자이 대통령은 9일 알카에다를 비롯한 테러조직을 분쇄하려면 파키스탄과의 공조체제를 강화해야 한다고 말했습니다.
카르자이 대통령은 이날 수도 카불에서 열린 ‘평화를 위한 부족장회의’에 참석해, 테러 조직과 싸워 이기려면 인접국인 파키스탄과의 공조체제를 한층 강화해야 할 것이라고 강조했습니다.
그러나 당초 참석하기로 했던 페르베즈 무샤라프 파키스탄 대통령은 이날 회의에 불참했습니다. 그 대신 파키스탄 측에서는 아지즈 총리가 참석했습니다. 당초 양국 정상과 부족 지도자들이 이 자리에서 알카에다를 비롯한 테러 조직을 색출,분쇄하는 방안을 논의하려 했습니다. 파키스탄과 아프가니스탄은 최근 국경지대에서 발생한 군사충돌을 둘러싸고 상대방을 비난하는 등 관계가 악화되고 있습니다. 이날 회의에는 당초 기대에 못 미치는 700여명이 참석했습니다.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is calling for greater cooperation between his country and Pakistan in the fight against extremism.
Mr. Karzai told hundreds of Afghan and Pakistani political and tribal leaders at the opening of a peace conference in Kabul today (Thursday) that terrorism could be eliminated within days if both countries work together.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was scheduled to address the tribal council (jirga) but abruptly canceled his appearance on Wednesday, citing domestic issues. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz is attending in his place.
The conference is designed to improve border security by curbing pro-Taleban militants operating in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Relations have soured as each government blames the other for a recent surge in militant attacks.
Security also is a concern at the conference itself. Thousands of armed soldiers are standing guard outside the jirga tent, and nearby roads have been closed to the public.
