영국 동남부에 있는 농장의 소들을 감염시킨 구제역 바이러스는 인근 연구소의 실험실에서 나왔을 가능성이 높다고 영국 정부 조사관들이 밝혔습니다.
영국 정부 보건안전청은 일차 보고서를 통해 첫 번째 구제역 감염소가 발견된 농장에서 6.5㎞밖에 떨어지지 않은 2개의 바이러스 백신 실험실이 바이러스의 출처일 가능성이 있다고 말했습니다.
하지만 이곳의 실험실 가운데 하나인 메리얼 애니멀 헬스는 8일 바이러스가 이곳에서 사람에 의해 감염돼 나갔다는 증거가 없다고 이 같은 보고 내용을 부인했습니다.
구제역은 소, 돼지 등 발굽이 갈라진 동물에 발생하는 전염병으로, 감염된 동물은 입이나 발굽 주변에 물집이 생기고 침을 흘리다 숨을 거두는 치명적인 질병입니다.
영국 정부 당국은 이미 100마리 이상의 가축을 도살처리하고 구제역이 퍼지는 것을 방지하기 위해 두 곳의 농장 주변에 감시 구역을 설정했습니다.
A research center in southern England says it is not the source of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease that has hit two herds of cattle.
A preliminary report by health inspectors said Tuesday there is a "strong probability" the strain of the virus came from a research facility southwest of London, which houses two laboratories.
One of the labs, Merial Animal Health, rejected the report today (Wednesday), saying it has no evidence the virus was transported out of its center by humans.
Merial is owned by the U.S. drug-maker Merck and France's Sanofi-Aventis SA. The other laboratory is run by the British government.
Both laboratories handle the rare viral strain of foot and mouth that has infected cattle on nearby farms.
Authorities have slaughtered more than 100 animals and set up exclusion zones around the two farms to prevent spread of the disease.
