호주는 핵 경쟁국인 인도와 함께 파키스탄에도 우라늄을 판매해 달라는 파키스탄의 요청을 거부했습니다.
알렉산더 다우너 호주 외무장관은 27일, 이같은 선택은 파키스탄이 유엔 핵사찰단의 파키스탄 원자력발전소 방문이 허용하지 않는 한, 불가능하다고 말했습니다.
이에 앞서 26일 호주는 세계에서 두번째로 인구가 많은 인도에 우라늄 판매를 고려하고 있다고 확인했습니다. 이에 대해 파키스탄은 인도가 우라늄을 사들인다면 파키스탄에도 똑같은 협상이 제의되어야 할 것이라고 주장했습니다.
인도와 파키스탄은 아직 핵확산금지조약에 서명하지 않았지만 인도는 핵원자로를 국제사찰단에 개방하기로 했습니다.

Australia has rejected a request from Pakistan that it sell uranium to the South Asian country along with its nuclear rival, India.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Friday that such an option is not possible as long as Islamabad refuses to allow United Nations nuclear inspectors to visit its nuclear power stations.
On Thursday, Australia confirmed it is considering selling uranium to India to help the world's second-most populous country generate power. Shortly afterwards, Pakistan argued that if India is going to receive uranium, it should be offered the same deal.
Both countries have yet to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but India has agreed to open its nuclear reactors to international inspectors.
