미국의 크리스토퍼 힐 국무부 동아시아태평양 담당 차관보는 북한이 영변 핵 시설을 폐쇄했다고 밝힌데 대해 환영을 표시했으나, 북한의 핵무기 계획을 종식시키기 위해서는 아직도 갈 길이 멀다고 말했습니다.
힐 차관보는 북한이 영변 핵 시설의 원자로를 폐쇄한 것은 첫 걸음에 불과하다며, 추후 조치가 취해져야 한다고 말했습니다.
힐 차관보는 15일중 국제원자력기구 (IAEA) 조사단의 보고를 받을 예정이라고 말했습니다.
14일 북한에 도착한 IAEA 검증조사단은 여러 주 동안 북한에 머물면서 영변 핵 시설의 폐쇄 여부를 조사하고 재가동을 막기 위한 감시기구를 설치할 예정입니다
IAEA의 북한 활동은 지난 2002년 북한이 핵확산 금지조약에서 탈퇴하면서 IAEA 대표단을 추방하고 영변 핵 시설을 다시 가동하기 시작한 이후 이번이 처음입니다.
북한은 지난 해 핵 실험을 실시한 바 있습니다.

A top U.S. nuclear negotiator is welcoming North Korea's reported shutdown of its main nuclear facility, but warns that more work is needed to end the country's weapons programs.
Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Christopher Hill called the shutdown of the North's Yongbyon reactor a "first step" that must be followed by other steps. He said he expected to be briefed on the shutdown by International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors later today (Sunday).
An IAEA team plans to spend weeks verifying the complete closure of the Yongbyon facility. Inspectors also intend to set up monitoring equipment to ensure the reactor is not restarted.
North Korea withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and restarted its Yongbyon reactor in early 2003, after Washington accused it of running a secret uranium enrichment program to make nuclear weapons. Pyongyang also exploded a nuclear device last year.
