U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe is the latest Republican lawmaker to call for a change in President Bush's strategy in Iraq.
Senator Snowe is co-sponsoring a bill that calls for a reduction of American troops in Iraq to begin in 120 days and a withdrawal by April 2008. Republican Gordon Smith is also co-sponsoring the bill.
In her decision calling for the change, Senator Snowe said the Iraqi government has failed to make measurable progress.
The U.S. Senate is now holding debate on Iraq.
The White House says an Iraq progress report will go to Congress Thursday or Friday, and that the report focuses less on benchmarks and more on satisfactory or unsatisfactory progress toward those benchmarks.
The U.S. House of Representatives is to vote later this week on a bill to change the course of the war.
But on Tuesday, President Bush urged Congress to wait until September to see if the troop build-up in Iraq is working. He warned that failure in Iraq would have serious consequences for America's future.
