China has executed the former head of the country's food and drug administration for corruption.
The official Xinhua news agency says Zheng Xiaoyu was put to death this (Tuesday) morning.
He had been convicted of taking bribes from pharmaceutical companies to approve hundreds of medications. Many of the drugs were substandard and in some cases, lethal.
A spokeswoman for the State Food and Drug Administration acknowledged today that China needs to improve its safety record for food and drugs.
She said China started its supervision programs late and that the foundations of this process are weak. She said the government is following a five-year plan to significantly reduce the problems with Chinese-made products by 2010.
Foreign governments have criticized China's safety record following the recent distribution of a series of low-quality or chemically-tainted food and drugs.
