인도네시아 검찰이 오늘(9일) 과거 막강한 권력을 행사했던 수하르토 전대통령을 상대로 민사소송을 제기했습니다. 인도네시아 검찰은 수하르토 전 대통령이 32년간 장기 재임하던당시 정부로부터 횡령한 혐의를 받고 있는 공적 자금을 회수하기 위해 이 같은 소송을 제기했습니다.
이번 소송을 담당하고 있는 인도네시아 검찰청의 다크메르 문테 검사는 수하르토 전 대통령에게 정부자금 4억 4천 100만달러의 반환과 11억달러의 피해액을 함께 청구했다고 말했습니다.
수하르토 전 대통령은 자신이 운영하는 수퍼세마르 재단으로 정부 자금을 유출시킨 뒤 자신의 아들과 친인척 소유 회사에 자금을 지원한 혐의 등을 받고 있습니다. 수퍼세마르 재단은 이번 소송에서 수하르토 전 대통령과 함께 피고로 지목됐습니다.
문테 검사는 정부자금은 애초 장학금을 위해 수퍼세마르 재단에 지급됐으나 다른 목적으로 전용됐다고 말했씁니다.
수하르토 전 대통령은 지난 1998년 그와 측근들의 부정부패에 분노한 시민들의 대규모 거리 시위 등으로 사임압력을 받은 뒤 권좌에서 물러났습니다.

Indonesian prosecutors have filed a civil lawsuit against former dictator Suharto to try to recover funds he allegedly stole from the state during his 32 years in power.
Prosecutor Dachmer Munthe says the suit demands Mr. Suharto repay the state 441 million dollars and one-point-one billion dollars in damages.
The lawsuit alleges Mr. Suharto funneled the state funds through the Supersemar foundation that he controlled. The foundation has been named as a co-defendant in the case.
Munthe says the money initially was intended for educational scholarships but that it ended up being used for other purposes.
Mr. Suharto was forced to step down in 1998 under pressure from street protesters upset by his alleged corruption. He has been accused of stealing billions of dollars in state funds, but has never been criminally prosecuted.
