유엔 안전보장이사회는 이라크의 대량살상무기를 제거하는 활동을 감독하는 프로그램을 폐지했습니다.
안전보장이사회는 29일 러시아가 기권한 가운데 14대 0으로 이 프로그램의 폐지를 가결했습니다. 유엔 ‘감시 검증 사찰 위원회’는 이라크가 화학무기와 생물무기를 파괴했고, 핵무기개발계획을 중단했는지 여부를 검증하기 위해 지난 1999년에 설치됐습니다. 유엔 사찰단은 2003년 이라크 침공이 시작되기 전에 이라크에서 철수했습니다. 미국은 이들의 보고서를 인정하지 않고, 2005년부터 이 사찰기구의 해체를 추진해 왔습니다.
미국 주도 연합국은 부시 미국 대통령이 이라크 침공의 명분으로 내세운 이라크의 대량살상무기개발 프로그램의 증거를 찾기 위해 ‘이라크 조사위원회’를 발족시켰습니다.
그러나 이라크에서 이런 대량살상무기 프로그램의 증거는 발견되지 않았습니다.

The United Nations Security Council has shut down the U.N. program responsible for overseeing the elimination of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
Council members voted 14 to zero today (Friday) to support the U.S.-British proposal to close the program. Russia abstained.
The U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) was established in 1999 to verify that Iraq destroyed its chemical and biological weapons and ended its nuclear weapons program.
U.N. inspectors pulled out of Iraq just before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. The U.S. did not allow them to return and has been pushing to dissolve the inspection body since 2005.
The U.S.-led coalition created the Iraq Survey Group to lead the post-invasion search for evidence of Iraq's alleged weapons program, which President Bush used to justify the invasion. However, no proof of active weapons of mass destruction programs was found.
